Medicinal Uses

Usnea, known for its antibiotic properties, is notably effective against rapid-growing pathogens such as streptococcus (strep throat), staphylococcus (staph infections), and mycobacterium tuberculosis. It has a unique ability to distinguish between harmful and beneficial bacteria within the body, preserving the essential gut flora necessary for combating infections. Usnea can be applied externally to treat staph outbreaks, cellulitis, and infected wounds. It can also be safely combined with echinacea for a short duration to enhance immune function and increase white blood cell activity.

In addition to its antibacterial properties, usnea has demonstrated antiviral capabilities in laboratory settings. It shows promise in combating viruses like the human papilloma virus (HPV) and conditions such as cervical dysplasia. Usnea is also effective in treating both systemic and localized yeast infections.

However, usnea is not recommended during pregnancy and may cause contact dermatitis in rare instances when used topically.
