Tormentil is recognized for its ability to tone tissues, providing strong astringent effects, making it beneficial for treating acute diarrhea and abnormal bodily discharges. Its astringency surpasses that of its relative, agrimony, and it adds a mucilaginous coating beneficial for gastrointestinal health. The herb is also valuable for addressing excessive bleeding and preventing infections, useful in cases of heavy menstrual bleeding, bloody stools, or external bleeding. It helps to alleviate inflammation and excess heat, conditions that can exacerbate bleeding. Furthermore, Tormentil can relieve restrictions in passageways, aiding in easing breathing difficulties in the respiratory tract and alleviating stomach and intestinal discomfort. It helps in opening sinus cavities and drying out tissues.
Medicinal Uses
Tormentil is esteemed for its tissue-toning and astringent properties, particularly effective in tightening a relaxed bowel and restoring tissue to its healthy state. It is a go-to herb for treating acute diarrhea and other abnormal bodily discharges. While similar to its relative agrimony, tormentil offers a more potent astringent effect and also produces a slight mucilaginous coating, which benefits the gastrointestinal tract.
In situations of excessive bleeding, such as heavy menstrual flow, bloody stools, or external wounds, tormentil can be instrumental in reducing or halting the bleed. It addresses the issue of excessive heat that can exacerbate these conditions, while also diminishing inflammation and potentially preventing infection.
Tormentil also plays a role in easing restrictions in the respiratory tract, aiding in easier breathing without claiming to cure respiratory diseases. Its infusion, when sprayed into the nose or used in a neti pot, can help clear and dry the sinus cavities. Additionally, it is recommended for alleviating stomach and intestinal discomfort, easing tension, and softening the abdomen.
However, caution is advised as some reports suggest that large doses of tormentil may interfere with the body's ability to absorb iron.
